This unique comic book, created by 2025-26 Aldo Leopold Fellow Emily Johnson, is printed on chlorine- and sulfur-free paper developed in 2007 by the Paper Science Lab of UW Stevens Point, first pulped at the United States Forest Service Forest Products Laboratory in Madison, Wisconsin.
The fiber for the book's paper came exclusively from pines planted by the Leopold family near the Shack in the 1030s and 40s. A special hard-cover edition of Aldo Leopold's A Sand County Almanac was first printed on this paper in 2007. The press trimmings from that printing were carefully stored until we discovered an appropriate use. Emily's delightful work is the discovery. The book's unusual size and switching orientation is designed to harmonize with the narrow strips remaining from the original, trimmed press sheets.
